Initially, clients are given the opportunity to share their goals and hopes for therapy. Then a treatment plan is devised, specifically tailored to best meet their unique needs and goals. Dr. Shemain is integrated in her approach, and draws from a wide variety of theoretical psychological orientations, always utilizing best practice techniques when appropriate.

For example, when helping a client deal with anxiety and/or depression, Dr. Shemain would primarily use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). However, depending on the client, she may also incorporate strategies and techniques from Compassionate Mind Therapy (CMT), Client-Centred Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Behavioural Therapy. Each type of therapy offers its own vantage point and unique set of tools to help people. Therefore, by drawing on these various theories, as well, as existentialism and psychodynamic theory, she is well equipped to offer treatment that is effective.

Mindfulness is often an important part of treatment as well, which typically involves breathing exercises, and sometimes meditation. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is extremely useful in helping individuals regulate their emotions and thus, experience more satisfying and fulfilling relationships.
